Oregon's heat and wildfire smoke training, ready to assign

Oregon OSHA requires yearly heat illness training for employees who may work where the heat index reaches 80°F, indoors or out, and yearly wildfire smoke training for employees who may be exposed to smoke at an air quality index of 101 or higher. Oregon OSHA's online courses cover the general topics, in English and Spanish. Ethica assigns them, keeps each certificate and brings them back every year, so launch them before the hot months.

The official Oregon courses, ready to assign

Launch a course in Ethica and each employee gets an email with a link to the official course. When they finish, they upload the certificate it gives them, and it's kept on their record. Ethica sends the reminders and schedules the next round.

Your obligations, and the proof each one demands

Every rule below is easiest to prove with a record of who completed the training, and when. Ethica keeps that record for each person.

Heat illness prevention training

OAR 437-002-0156; OAR 437-004-1151

Who and when
Every employee who may work where the heat index reaches 80°F, indoors or out, including supervisors: every year before that work begins
Proof to produce
A training record with each employee's name, the dates of training and who conducted it (OAR 437-002-0156(10))

Wildfire smoke training

OAR 437-002-1081; OAR 437-004-9791

Who and when
Every employee who may be exposed to wildfire smoke at an air quality index of 101 or higher: every year before exposure
Proof to produce
A record of each employee's most recent annual training, with their name, the dates and who conducted it, kept for one year (OAR 437-002-1081(5))

Each course covers part of what the rules require: the heat course 5 of the 7 required topics, and the smoke course 5 of the 10. You still train people on your own heat procedures and acclimatization plan, and on your respirators, air quality monitoring, supervisor procedures and two-way communication system for smoke.

Frequently asked questions

When does the training have to happen?
Every year, before employees start work that could expose them to heat illness (OAR 437-002-0156) or to wildfire smoke (OAR 437-002-1081).
What records do we need?
For heat, a training record with each employee's name, the dates of training and who conducted it. For wildfire smoke, a record of each employee's most recent annual training, kept for one year.
Is there a Spanish version?
Yes. Oregon OSHA publishes both courses in Spanish, and the link in each employee's email leads to the course page.
How does the employee get a certificate?
Each course ends with a quiz. Employees enter their name and email at the end, and Oregon OSHA emails them a link to their certificate, which they upload to Ethica.
